Hong Kong Airport - All Information on Hong Kong Airport (HKG)

Originally built on the island of Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong International Airport is sometimes also referred to as Chek Lap Kok Airport and carries the international code of HKG/HKIA (IATA) and VHHH (ICAO). Hong Kong Airport sits on an elevated location of 8.53 meters above sea level and is the world's eight-busiest airport in terms of annual passenger traffic (74,672,000 in 2018, 37,835,000 passengers in the first half of 2019). HKG's total capacity has already been exceeded; it was originally designed to handle only 70,502,000 passengers annually.

The official airport address is at 1 Sky Plaza Road, Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong (tel +852 2181 8888). The airport has two runways, two terminals and one satellite building.

Operated by Airport Authority Hong Kong, HKIA is open 24 hours a day and serves as primary hub for Cathay Pacific, Cathay Dragon, Hong Kong Airlines and HK Express. HKG offers passengers around 45 destinations to mainland China alone, and numerous connections to the rest of the world, including Amsterdam, Auckland, Delhi, Dubai, Frankfurt, London and Tokyo. International airlines include Aeroflot (Moscow), Air Canada (Toronto, Vancouver), Air France (Paris) and British Airways (London). HKIA offers passengers onward air travel with more than 100 airlines.

HKIA has 90 boarding gates, of which 12 are 'virtual gates' where passengers assemble to be transported to their aircraft by apron shuttle buses.

Hong Kong International Airport Terminals

Terminal 1 is the world's third largest passenger terminal, after Dubai International Airport's Terminal 3 and Beijing Capital International Airport's Terminal 3. Within a total area of 6,100,000 sq ft / 570,000 square meters, Terminal 1 handles all arrivals. The Arrivals Hall is located on Level 5.

Terminal 2 handles all departures. Here check-in is located, there are no gates or an arrivals hall. Terminal 2 is mostly used by budget airlines. HKIA's Sky Plaza is located in the upper part, the Mezzanine, of Terminal 2.
The airport is due for expansion at Terminal 2. At present, the two-storey North Satellite Concourse handles additional arrivals and departures. It only has 10 jet bridges and a total floor space of 20,000 sq meters/220,000 sq ft. North Satellite Concourse (NSC) is designed to handle around five million passengers per year. A shuttle bus service runs every 4 minutes between NSC and Terminal 1. Departures are handled on one level, arrivals on another.

In the western part of Terminal 1 lies the Midfield Concourse, inaugurated in 2016. Around 20 aircraft can park here.

Ground Transportation

Passengers can choose car rental, taxis, Airport Express trains, ferries and city buses for onward travel. Airport Express trains are the fastest way to get from HKG to the Central Business District and other city destinations – it takes only 24 minutes for the trip. Trains leave HKIA every 10 minutes during the day and every 12 minutes at night. Taking a taxi to the city center costs ca 40.00 euros and takes 30 to 40 minutes.
